We carry
them forward.

Honoring the firefighters and first responders we lost, and the families who carry their memory.

IN HONOR OF THE FIREFIGHTERS
AND FIRST RESPONDERS OF SEPTEMBER 11
A remembrance by Black Helmet

01 / THE MORNING

A morning
like any other.

People went to work. Families made plans for the evening. Across New York, firefighters began another day of service.

An ordinary day, with every reason to expect they would come home.

02 / THE CALL

8:46 A.M.

The call came.

The North Tower was struck. First responders mobilized as an ordinary morning became a national emergency.

There were people who needed help.

In remembrance of all lives lost in New York, at the Pentagon, and aboard Flight 93.

03 / THE RESPONSE

They went
to help.

Firefighters climbed toward people who needed them. Police officers guided evacuations. EMS crews cared for the injured.

Across the response, the purpose was to save lives.

Courage, in service of others.

04 / THE EMPTY PLACES

A place that
no one can fill.

An empty place at the kitchen table. A locker at the firehouse. A voice a family would spend the rest of their lives remembering.

Before they were names on a memorial, they were the people someone loved.

For the families, friends, and firehouses who carry their absence.

05 / THE ROLL OF HONOR

Remember every name.

The 343 FDNY members lost on September 11, 2001.
Each name belongs to a life.

06 / THE YEARS SINCE

The loss did not
end that day.

In the years that followed, more responders and recovery workers died from illnesses connected to their service. Others continue to live with the consequences.

Their families belong in this remembrance, too.

07 / OUR COUNTRY

A country worth
showing up for.

In the response to September 11, people came forward to help strangers. That willingness to care for one another remains something we can choose.

In our communities. Across our country.
In the way we answer when someone needs us.
